          Definitions

          Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Digital/computerized systems capable of machine learning, problem-solving, decision-making, and reasoning.

          Assistive AI

Digital/computerized applications and tools designed to help humans work more efficiently and faster. Assistive AI does not require user prompts and does not create or develop new material. It is designed to augment existing processes and material. (e.g. spell check, grammar check, assistive layout (but not creation) tools, word processing programs, electronic dictionaries/thesauruses, speech-to-text services, fact-checking databases, predictive text, automated pagination and typesetting tools, etc.).

          Generative AI

Digital/computerized applications, tools, and systems which produce new content based on user prompts. Generative AI uses large datasets to generate output based on patterns present in the datasets. (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Poe, Grammarly AI, Sudowrite, NovelAI, Character.AI, etc.).

2027 Eligibility Statement: Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in submitted titles

The Saskatchewan Book Awards’ mandate is to recognize, celebrate, and reward excellence in writing and publishing. The goal behind this mandate is to build greater awareness and appreciation of Saskatchewan books and to increase reader engagement. Our focus is on celebrating this excellence in human creativity.

Books submitted for consideration must therefore represent only the original work of human writers, editors, designers, illustrators, and publishers. Books for which Generative AI was used to generate, develop, refine, or produce content (including, but not limited to, text, cover art, interior design, indices, tables of contents, or other creative content) are not eligible.

Discovery of AI Generative content may result in disqualification of a submission, withdrawal from the competition, and forfeiture of any award and prize monies.

The Saskatchewan Book Awards recognizes creative professionals may use Assistive AI services which have been part of the writing and publishing toolbox for many years. Therefore, this eligibility criterion does not apply to the use of Assistive AI tools used for administration, accessibility, research, or production.

As technology, including those used in AI tools, and industry standards continue to evolve, the Saskatchewan Book Awards will continue to monitor and review this policy.
